Braves rally to gain split

BRUNSWICK – The host Bowdoin College Polar Bears split a softball doubleheader with Husson College of Bangor here Wednesday. Bowdoin won the first game 6-3 and Husson came back to take the second 8-1.

In the first game, Jessi Beadnell (3-1) pitched a five-hitter and hit a double and single to lead the 3-3 Polar Bears to the win. Jen Davis also doubled and singled for two RBIs while Cami Schuler added a double.

Bowdoin took firm control of the game in the third with a sacrifice fly by Wendy Harvey and an RBI groundout by Davis.

For the 9-2 Husson Braves, Michelle Provencal doubled and singled. Crystal Hinton (5-2) took the loss.

In the second game, Husson’s Amy Dyer (4-0) limited Bowdoin to six hits while the Braves’ offense cranked out 11 hits to key the victory.

Lorie Stevens doubled and singled to help pace Husson. Sue Teeney singled twice and Yanush doubled. Husson erupted for four runs in the fourth on an error, an Angeline Grant two-run single, and Shaw’s RBI single.

USM splits doubleheader

At Gorham, the host University of Southern Maine Huskies split a doubleheader with the University of New England of Biddeford.

Southern Maine won the first game 6-3 and UNE took the second 3-0.

In the first game, Julie Bernier tripled, doubled, and singled for four RBIs and led a 14-hit USM attack to key the victory.

For the 7-6 Huskies, Kim Shaw singled twice and doubled, and Stacey Marotta doubled and singled. Lisa Farr and Cindy Barbeau each hit two singles. Michelle Beaulieu (2-2) pitched an eight-hitter for the win.

Jen Cullen and Mary Beth Hannon each singled twice to lead the offense for the 14-7 UNE Red Knights.

In the second game, Julie Ledoux tripled and singled, and Katie Russell singled twice for two RBIs to pace the Knights to the win.

For UNE, Karen Bailey (8-2) pitched a three-hitter to notch the win.

Jen Candage (2-2) took the loss for USM.
