NORTHEAST HARBOR — Mount Desert residents will have the chance to debate some town issues at the upcoming series of village meetings, held in five communities beginning next month.
The first is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, May 18, at the Otter Creek Firehouse, where members of the Board of Selectmen will open discussion on a number of issues.
Consideration of public opinion on islandwide cooperation for emergency dispatching, recycling, and solid waste disposal is on the agenda, as is a look at how capital funding can be increased.
Since the town’s comprehensive plan lists owners of seasonal homes as the principal source of town income, residents will be asked to consider how Mount Desert can continue to support its summer residents without also attracting transient visitors.
Recycling is also on the agenda, with questions raised about its effectiveness and efficiency and whether curbside pickup of recyclables should be funded.
Another item for discussion will be how money should be spent to map, protect, acquire and improve the town’s natural, marine, cultural and recreational resources.
Residents may consider additionally whether any areas in town could be rezoned to encourage development and year-round employment without affecting the character of the town.
Other village meetings, all held at 7 p.m., are scheduled throughout the summer. The schedule includes meetings on June 15, at the Somesville Fire Station; July 6, at the municipal building in Northeast Harbor; July 20, at the Seal Harbor Fire House; and Aug. 17, in Pretty Marsh.
