President Bush has announced that he will not “dump largesse” on the poor in Los Angeles in the aftermath of the riots there.

It was with curious wonderment that I read definitions nos. 1 and 3 for “largesse” in Webster’s 7th New Collegiate Dictionary.

The first definition is: liberal giving to or as if to an inferior.

The third definition is: an innate generosity of mind and spirit.

We may be assured that Bush intends not to dump either defined largesse on the poor. But we must be relieved that he has finally admitted there are poor. Truman Black Whiting
