State report on Hegarty death delayed

Attorney General Michael Carpenter said Tuesday that the expected release of information into last week’s shooting death of Katherine Hegarty of Jackman has been postponed until Thursday.

Carpenter said Tuesday night that he plans to meet with Hegarty’s husband, Jack, on Wednesday in Jackman. He said that Hegarty said he has information he would like to share with investigators.

He said that because of the public outcry, he probably would have to call a press conference.

The Attorney General’s Office has been investigating the shooting since it occurred on Saturday, May 16. Katherine Hegarty, 51, of Jackman was shot three times and killed by three law enforcement officers after a brief standoff outside her secluded cabin.

Hegarty allegedly had fired a .22-caliber rifle in the area where four fishermen were camping about 100 feet from her cabin. The fishermen notified police who stormed her cabin. Police claim Hegarty was pointing the rifle at them. They fired three shots that hit her in the neck, chest and leg.

The shooting has prompted a demonstration protesting the use of deadly force against the woamn as well as a petition drive focused at the Attorney General’s Office.

An investigator for the Attorney General’s Office said last week that the investigation was almost complete and that a statement should be prepared for release Wednesday.
