Tennis quarterfinals set

The Fort Kent Warriors were supposed to start defense of their Eastern Maine Class B Team Tennis Championship on Thursday afternoon, hosting one of several regional quarterfinal matches around the region.

Instead Fort Kent, 10-2, will advance into the semifinals after sixth-ranked Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield forfeited their opening-round match.

Prior educational commitments by some MCI players forced the Huskies to withdraw. Fort Kent will host No. 4 Ellsworth on Saturday at a time to be determined.

In Class A boys quarterfinal action which will take place, No. 7 Hampden (6-6) is at No. 2 Brunswick (8-1), at 3 p.m.; No. 6 Presque Isle (8-4) travels to No. 3 Old Town (10-2), for a 4 p.m. match (played at the University of Maine courts in Orono); and No. 5 Bangor (7-6) heads to No. 4 Cony of Augusta (9-3), for a 1 p.m. showdown.

Class A girls action sees No. 7 Brewer (8-4) at No. 2 Gardiner (8-1), at 4 p.m.; No. 6 Old Town (8-4) at No. 3 Waterville (9-1), also at 4 p.m.; and No. 5 Bangor (9-4) at No. 4 Cony (9-4), for a 3 p.m. match.

In “B” boys quarterfinals, No. 3 Foxcroft Academy (11-1) entertains No. 6 Houlton (12-2) at 4 p.m. while No. 4 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield hosts No. 5 Mount Desert Island (10-2) at 4:30 p.m. at Manson Park.

In the only Class C quarterfinal match scheduled, the fourth-ranked Van Buren boys (6-6) host fifth-ranked Penobscot Valley of Howland (4-8) in a 2 p.m. match.
