JONESBORO — Jonesboro residents voting in the state $79 million jobs-bond referendum on June 9, will in essence be choosing whether they want their town officers to work in their homes or in municipal offices.

The town has applied for $50,000 of the bond issue to help fund a $100,000 project to renovate the former elementary school into town offices, a small meeting rooms, kitchen and library. A fireproof vault also would be installed to house important town records.

The town’s records currently are kept at the homes of town officials.

The idea of a town office, although opposed by a substantial number of residents, would consolidate the records, provide a central office from which to serve the public on scheduled days.

Voters at a special town meeting in May authorized selectmen to apply for the funds.

The jobs-bond issue was proposed as a means of creating employment to help stimulate the sagging Maine economy, to infrastructure across the state, and to provide money for municipal construction projects.
