The schoolboy teams from Old Town and Cony of Augusta went down to the final heat of the final event. Likewise, Mount Ararat of Topsham and Brewer put on a great show in the schoolgirl meet at the Eastern Maine Class A Track & Field Championships at Cameron Stadium in Bangor Saturday.

After the last relay runners crossed the finish line, and the officials finished tallying up the meet points, the Old Town and Cony boys were tied with 90 points apiece to win co-championships.

In the girls meet, Coach Diane Fournier’s Mount Ararat Eagles picked up where they left off at the end of the indoor track season with another championship by outscoring runnerup Brewer 90 to 82.

Fournier pointed to her team leaders as the reason for the win.

“Cindy Pomerleau hasn’t done much in the triple jump and she ended up second. And obviously Cuyler Goodwin and Leah Evans were key in the events they ran,” Fournier said.

Coach Rod White’s Old Town boys did what they were supposed to. They were seeded for 90 points. Coach Steve Swindells’ Cony boys slightly overachieved. They were only supposed to score 87.

It all came down to the last event – the 1600 relay. Cony held a scant three-point lead over Old Town. To win the meet, Old Town had to finish two places higher than Cony and no lower than third.

“We did all we could,” said White. “We held our seed in the relay and scored what we were supposed to. We had to beat Cony by two places in the relay. We were second and they tied Brunswick for third.”

Teams are awarded 10 points for first, eight for second, six for third, four for fourth, two for fifth, and one for sixth.

When Cony and Brunswick tied for third, each team was awarded five points.

The weather was about as bad as it possibly could have been, but the exciting finishes of both meets made braving the continuous rain showers worth it for the 100 or so parents and students who showed up.

“I think the bad weather affected everybody else negatively, but the Cony boys seemed to rise to the occasion,” said Swindells. “It came down to the relay and you couldn’t have had a better track scenario.”

Old Town and Cony were never more than six points apart after the fourth event.

White credited his team depth and some personal best individual performances for the win.

“I think the big key was Joe Dana in the two mile (3200). He was seeded eighth and he got fourth with a school-record personal best (9:59.2),” said White. “If it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t have been in a position to win.”

For Cony, the key was senior Steve Blais. Blais won the 110 hurdles and high jump, and was fourth in the 300 hurdles and triple jump.

The other big, individual standout at the boys meet was Old Town’s Dereck Treadwell, who won the 800 and 1600 runs.

There were many more multiple individual champions in the girls meet. Leah Evans of Mount Ararat won the 800 and 1600 while teammate Cuyler Goodwin won the 100 and was second in the 200 and 400. Gardiner’s Jennifer Lavallee won the 300 hurdles and the 200.

Brewer’s Amy Winchester won the discus and shot put. Caroline Chapin from Morse in Bath won the triple and long jumps.
