Bangor’s Bassi captures all-around gym title > Eastern Maine team takes 2nd

Erica Bassi of Bangor won the state all-around title with winning performances in the vault, bars, beam, and floor exercise competition during the United States Gymnastics Federation Level 7 and Level 6 State Championships held mid-May at Maine-ly Gymnastics in Augusta.

Eastern Maine Gymnastics Center teammate Kristin Johnston, also of Bangor, finished second all-around.

Bassi, competing in Level 7 Senior Division, won the all-around title with 33.45 points. Her winning vault score of 9.6 was the highest score in the state meet. Bassi’s other winning scores were 8.2 on the beam, 8.1 in floor exercise, and 7.55 on the bars.

Johnston finished second all-around with 29.9 points following a 7.65 on both the vault and in floor exercise, 7.35 on bars, and 7.25 on the beam.

In team competition, EMGC of Bangor finished second in the state, losing to Andy Valley Gymnastics School of Auburn by three-tenths of a point, Coach Mike Level 7 Junior Division competitor Brooke Hayes of Bangor won the beam competition with an 8.4 and finished second all-around with 33.3 points after posting a 9.1 on the vault for second place, an 8.5 second-place finish on bars, a 7.25 on the beam, and 8.4 floor exercise routine.

Beth Panco of Bangor was third in the vault with 8.4 and fourth on bars with a 7.9 and had a 7.25 in floor exercise for an all-around scwith a 7.9 and had a 7.25 in floor exercise for an all-around score of 29.6.

Emily Hanson of Orrington, competing in Level 6 Children’s Division, finished fourth overall with a 29.6 after finishing second in vault, 8.2; third on beam, 6.95; fourth on bars, 7.15 and a 7.3 in floor exercise.

Anju Rozario of Bangor came in third in floor exercise with a 7.95 while posting a score of 7.6 on vault and 7.45 on beam.

Logan Svoboda of Bangor tied for fourth all-around with 29.05 after a 7.4 on vault and beam, 7.95 in floor exercise and 6.3 on bars.

Next on the schedule for EMGC students is the annual trek to New Brunswick to compete in an international meet with some of the top Canadian gymnasts. EMGC will send 25 gymnasts to that meet in which more than 300 competitors are registered.

Karen Currier of Newport, who played her high school softball for John Bapst Memorial of Bangor, was a member of the first varsity softball team at Hartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y.

The Hartwick Warriors finished with an 8-14 overall record, playing a competitive schedule that included dropping two games to NCAA Divison III power SUNY-Cortland and two games to the College of St. Rose, a top NCAA Division II team.

Currier saw action in nine games, starting three.
