Dean at George Stevens Academy honored

BLUE HILL — Beulah Grant, dean of students at George Stevens Academy, received two commendations this spring, one of which included her choice of student to receive a scholarship for technical school education.

Grant was honored as Counselor of the Year of Maine by the New England Association of College Admission Counselors and Outstanding Educator by Washington County Technical College of Calais. Both are in recognition for her work as guidance counselor at George Stevens.

The New England group’s recognition is designed to raise the awareness and support for “the complicated and productive role all school counselors play in their communities.” Grant was commended for her qualities of “sensitivity, honesty, thoroughness, patience, leadership and sense of humor.”

The award from Washington County Technical College is presented annually to a Maine educator who, in their estimation, “goes above and beyond the call of duty in raising the aspirations of Maine youth.”

It provides a full-tuition scholarship to a student of Grant’s choice who plans to attend the technical college next fall. The value of the scholarship ranges from $1,152 to $2,256, depending of the student’s choice of program.

Grant has been an “integral part” of George Stevens since August 1980.

She has been responsible for activities such as the initiation and coordination of post-secondary exploration and workshops for high school students in Hancock and Waldo counties.

The project allows representatives from Maine colleges and universities to visit local high schools and talk with students about their programs.
