2 persons die in separate accidents

At least two people were killed Thursday in road accidents in Maine, including a Canadian truck driver who was ejected when his vehicle rolled over on Interstate 95 in Pittsfield.

The driver, who’s name wasn’t immediately released, apparently fell asleep and began drifting off the right side of the highway about 4 p.m., said State Trooper Daniel Bacheller.

When the truck struck the road’s shoulder, the man apparently woke up and overcompensated by steering hard to the left side of the highway, causing the flat-bed truck to roll over, Bacheller said.

The driver was transferred from Sebasticook Valley Hospital in critical condition after the accident, and died en route to the Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

In Madison, a woman was killed Thursday afternoon when a car and van collided head-on on Route 201, said Cpl. David Trask of the Madison Police Department.

Jamie Whitmore, 38, of Sabattus was pronounced dead at the scene at 2 p.m., Trask said.

The driver of the van, Joseph Richard, 77, of Ft. Pierce, Fla., suffered a fractured ankle and lacerations. He was listed in satisfactory condition at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, a nursing supervisor said.

Trask said the accident remains under investigation.
