Someday, perhaps, someone from Lubec will make a judgement about Lubec and Lubecers. Perhaps they’ll say even America’s pride is based as much on her past as her current conditions. Might bring up the fact that Lubec is a small town with big people in it – you know – the salt of the earth types: clam diggers, factory workers, farmers – hard workers who fit no one’s mold of 9-5 work, weekends off, credit cards. Makes many Lubecers a little hard to peg and describe. Then there are those who retired “home” – glad to get away from the unpleasant hyperactive, over achieving, selfish, violent “out there”.

I hop they say that there are two or three things a Lubeccer would announce to these people from “far away” who judge us by their past and their previous environment. If you genuiely find us so slack and lacking, go away and find a better place! or keep still and work to fix the insufficiencies you see! Or let’s talk deah!

I can tell you things you couldn’t possibly know about us because you’ve asked no questions, talked to your own kind mostly and don’t know sin from Shinola about where you ended up.

We don’t blow our own horns though. We work to keep body, soul, and our own pride together through the town’s highs and lows. We remember that the boards came up over the store windows after the buildings we sold to others. Remember that we’ve seen this before and that we were here, are here, and will be here. Lubec, Lubecers – rugged, hardworking, and for the most part, quiet and busy. So probably no one from here will bother to gainsay what people “from away” say. We’ll just keep right on bieng from Lubec, Maine. Jill Mulholland South Lubec
