The Bangor State Fair is adding a bread baking competition to its list of events this year.

The Bangor State Fair will be one of 50 fairs to host the Land O’Lakes Light Sour Cream Quick Bread Contest in 1992.

“We started with five fairs in 1989 and have now expanded to 50,” said Milyn Villareal, marketing manager. “We’ve enjoyed enthusiastic participation and an abundance of delicious recipes. Sponsoring this contest is also an effective way to stay in touch with our consumers.”

Prizes of $100, $50 and $25 will be awarded to first, second and third place winners respectively. Each winner also will receive a certificate, ribbon and apron. Judging will be based on taste appeal (40 percent), originality (25 percent), appearance (25 percent), and ease of preparation (10 percent).

Winning recipes in the past have varied by fair and by year. Apricots were a popular ingredient in 1990, while pears were the hot item in 1991. Winning recipes have included Cranberry Sour Cream Crumble, German Chocolate Chip Tea Loaf, and Raspberry Double Cream Coffee Cake.

Bakers of all skill levels can enjoy tasty rewards by creating recipes featured in the new brochure, “Award Winning State Fair Quick Breads.” It is available free from Land O’Lakes by calling 1-800-782-9602.

The Bangor State Fair’s Light Sour Cream Quick Bread Contest will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 31, at the Civic Center Exhibition Hall. For more information, check the fair premium book or call the Civic Center at 942-9000.
