West edges East Houlton and Machias win LL divisions

Bucksport, Bangor West, Waldo County, Houlton, and Machias notched victories Wednesday to highlight the Little League baseball and softball, Junior and Senior League baseball action around the region.

Bangor West stayed unbeaten in the District 3 Little League baseball tourney with an eight-inning, 3-2 win over Bangor East in the Penobscot division. Bucksport continued its way through the loser’s bracket and eliminated Mount Desert Island 7-6.

Bangor East will host Bucksport Thursday in an elimination game. The winner will play Bangor West Friday.

Houlton eliminated Katahdin 8-4 and won the Aroostook Division championship. Machias won the Downeast title with a 7-0 win over Calais. Houlton will host Machias Saturday in the first game of a best-of-three series.

In District 2 baseball action, Waldo County eliminated Camden 8-1 and will play at Belfast Monday for the district championship.

All games start at 5:30 p.m.

In the Senior League (ages 14-15) tournament at Mansfield Complex in Bangor, Brewer downed Old Town 5-2 and Millinocket eliminated Bangor East 20-6.

Millinocket will play Old Town at 3 p.m. Thursday and Brewer advances to play Bangor West at 5:30 p.m.

In the Junior League tourney at Garland Street Field in Bangor, Millinocket defeated Old Town???.

District 3 Baseball

Bangor West 3, Bangor East 2

At Fourteenth Street Field, two runners scored in the bottom of the eighth inning when Luke Turner of Bangor West reached on an error and gave Bangor West the come-from-behind win.

For 3-0 Bangor West, Tom Waterman allowed four hits, striking out 10 batters and walking two, to notch the win.

Bangor West scored its first run in the second when pinch runner Josh McAuliffe scored on from third on an error.

For 2-1 Bangor East, Josh Pressley struck out 16 batters, walked two, and allowed five hits. Chris Nil doubled and singled.

Mike Arsenault doubled in the first run for Bangor East in the first and Tom Carey’s RBI single plated the second in the eighth.

Machias 7, Calais 0

At Calais, G.J. Wood struck out 11 batters, walked one, and pitched a two-hitter to lead Machias to the Downeast division championship.

For 2-0 Machias, Wood also singled twice for two RBIs. Matt Wright hit an RBI double.

Tony Chebre and Bob McManus each singled for the only hits by 1-2 Calais.

Bucksport 7, MDI 6

At Bucksport, Nick Raymond’s RBI single in the top of the sixth inning scored Cameron Giroux with the winning run for the Bucksport All-Stars.

For 5-1 Bucksport, Buss Simpson led the hitters with a triple and single. Giroux had an RBI double. Brandon Gilman pitched a five-hitter to notch the victory.

Josh Schwartz led the way for the 4-2 MDI Acadians by going 4-for-4 with a double and three singles. Devin Luedeke singled.

Houlton 8, Katahdin 4

At Sherman Mills, Jake Cowperthwaite and Lucas Ritchie combined to pitch a six-hitter as 3-0 Houlton clinched the Aroostook division title.

Ritchie, who relieved Cowperthwaite in the sixth, paced Houlton with three singles, including a two-run hit in the first inning. Brad Sewell had two hits, including a two-run double in the fifth.

Alex Dyer tripled and singled for 2-2 Katahdin, while Willie Sleeper added a pair of singles.

District 2 Baseball

Waldo 8, Camden 1

At Winterport, winning pitcher Jason Littlefield struck out seven without walking anybody and scattered five hits over six innings to lead Waldo into the Dist. 2 championship game.

For 3-1 winners, Rebecca Tripp had a two-run double while Ben Preston plated a run with a double and a single. Jeff McDougall added two singles for the winners.

For 2-2 Camden, Jon Moro doubled and Travis Brown had an RBI single.

Senior League Baseball

Brewer 5, Old Town 2

At Bangor, Dennis Roy pitched a five-hitter to help lead Brewer to the victory.

For 2-0 Brewer, Ben Roeder hit a two-run single and Aaron Boone added an RBI single.

Byron Ouellette singled twice to lead the offense for 0-1 Old Town.

Millinocket 20, Bangor East 6

At Bangor, Wade Coffin had four singles and three RBIs to help lead Millinocket’s offense in the victorious effort.

For 1-1 Millinocket, which broke the game open with 10 runs in the fourth, Brian Johnson had a triple, two singles, and three RBIs. John Montgomery pitched a four-hitter and hit three singles for two RBIs.

Eric McAvoy doubled twice and Dave McLaughlin had two singles and two RBIs.

For 0-2 Bangor East, Andy Robichaud hit a two-run single to lead the team.
