LEWISTON — The head of the region’s largest supermarket chain joined his wife in making one of three separate gifts of $1 million to Bates College, the school announced.

James L. Moody Jr., chairman of Hannaford Bros. of Scarborough, and his wife, Jean, gave the gift to the private liberal arts college in their names. Two more $1 million donations were made anonymously.

“It is important to know I’ve done the right thing for Bates,” said Moody, a 1953 graduate whose company is the parent of Shop ‘n Save supermarkets.
