Bangor East bests Waldo

Bangor East and Falmouth each won opening-round games at the State Little League Tournament at Sanford Saturday to highlight weekend baseball action. Bangor East downed Waldo County 6-2 and Falmouth beat Auburn Suburban 10-3.

In the State Junior (age 13) Little League tourney at Westbrook, Saco eliminated Millinocket 10-5 for the title.

In softball action, Augusta East downed Bucksport for the State L.L. Softball title at Auburn and Portland North eliminated Auburn 14-11 for the State Senior L.L. Softball title.

On Monday, Waldo will face Auburn Suburban in a 5:30 p.m. elimination game at Sanford. The 8 p.m. game will match Bangor East against District 4 champ Sanford.

Saco will take on New Hampshire state champ Bedford, N.H., Tuesday at Westbrook in a 5 p.m. doubleheader in New England regional action.

Bangor East 6, Waldo 2

At Sanford, Josh Pressley pitched a three-hitter, struck out nine, and walked one to help lead Bangor East to the victory.

For 1-0 Bangor East, Tom Carey’s two-run single in the first inning helped get Bangor’s offense started. Mike Arsenault hit a bases-loaded, two-run single with two outs in the second. The East side’s other runs were scored on a passed ball and fielder’s choice in the fifth.

Pressley and Chris Nill each hit two singles for Bangor East.

For 0-1 Waldo County, Matt Martin, Bill Ard, and Billy Preston each hit a single.

Falmouth 10, Auburn 3

At Sanford, Evan DeSieyes’ three-run double capped a five-run fourth inning rally that erased a 3-0 deficit and led Falmouth over Auburn Suburban.

Winning pitcher Tyler Anderson had a two-run double in a five-run fifth inning. Nick DeSieyes added a two-run single in that inning.

Anderson went the distance for the win, striking out nine and walking two while scattering six hits. Anderson and Evan DeSieyes each had singles to go with their doubles.

Matt Simard had a double and a single for Auburn Suburban with Jamie Dumais and Don Philbrook contributing run-scoring singles.

Saco 10, Millinocket 5

At Westbrook, Travis Topham’s two-run single highlighted a five-run rally in the second inning that helped to lift Saco to the State Junior L.L. title.

For undefeated Saco, Robert Roberge notched the win after pitching the first five innings and allowing three runs. He also had two singles and an RBI. Travis Topham had three singles to lead the offense. Kris Mercier hit two singles, a double. and two RBIs.

For Millinocket, Aaron Landry doubled twice. Steve Osborne took the loss. He also hit an RBI single.
