Performance by cellist to end concert series

MACHIAS — Machias Bay Chamber Concerts will end the 1992 season with a performance by cellist Leslie Parnas at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at the Center Street Congregational Church in Machias.

With the exception of a one-year European tour, Parnas has performed annually in the concert series since 1978. Pianist Thomas Stumpf, who accompanied Parnas last season, will also return this year.

The program includes three sonatas, and arrangements by Kabalevsky and Richard Strauss.

Called “one of the most outstanding cellists of our times,” by cellist Pablo Casals, Parnas studied with Gregor Piatigorsky at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and frequently performed at the Casal festivals in Prades and Puerto Rico.

Parnas achieved international fame and recognition in 1962 when he became a major prize winner in the celebrated Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

The cellist has recorded all of Beethoven’s sonatas for Stuttgart radio in Germany. Parnas also records for Columbia, Vanguard and Book of the Month Club labels.

Stumpf holds degrees in piano performance from the Mozarteum in Salsburg, Austria and Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music.

The post-concert art display in the church vestry will include works by Janis Schlenz of Roque Bluffs, Lesbia Ramos of Lubec and Sidney Bahrt of Pembroke.
