Howland offers deal on helmets

HOWLAND — Thanks to the assistance of the Maine Coalition For Safe Kids, the town of Howland is selling bicycle helmets at a reduced cost, in an effort to promote bicycle safety.

Howland Police Chief Stuart Morin said the Sportech-brand bicycle helmets, which sell for $39.95 in stores, could be purchased from the town for $15.

Morin said Howland was the only town office he knew of selling the helmets. Helmets were available in child, youth and adult sizes.

Morin, who is a member of the coalition, said that, in addition to selling bicycle helmets to promote bicycle safety, bike rodeos have been held at which children are given tips about bike and equipment safety, proper clothing and more.

The police chief believes most bicycle injuries could be prevented if people wear bicycle helmets and act safely. Morin said that without proper safety equipment, children could be seriously injured or killed just riding a bicycle around their neighborhood.

In addition to bicycle helmets, Morin said the town also could provide car seats at a reduced cost.

The police chief, who is a safety seat belt instructor, stressed the importance of parents’ making sure children under 19 wore seat belts in accordance with the law.
