GREENVILLE — Three members of the Maine Forest Service were en route to Idaho on Friday to battle fires that have burned 330,000 acres in that state over the past month.
Additional volunteers from Maine may be sent if the situation fails to improve, said Harry Doughty, fire support supervisor.
The three who left Friday were chief pilot John Knight, aircraft maintenance supervisor Gary Davis and forest ranger Alan Johnston. The three were placed on the federal payroll when they left Maine.
The largest Idaho fire was on desert grassland between Boise and Mountain Home. It had covered up to 50,000 acres and moved within six miles of Boise but crews had secured lines on two sides.
