Carl Smith out of football

Carl Smith, Maine’s all-time rushing leader, ran out of desire to play football during a two-week tryout with the Philadelphia Eagles last spring.

Smith said since he and the Eagles reached the conclusion the NFL was not in his future, he has put football out of his mind.

“I’m glad I had the opportunity, but I found out I’d had enough,” said Smith, who ran for 4,025 yards at Maine from 1988-91. “I had some injuries that still bothered me in my ankles and back. I found out I lost the desire. I didn’t want to take any more shots.”

Having graduated with a degree in business administration, Smith, of Riverhead, N.Y., has returned home to live with his parents while he hunts for a job in his field.

“I’m sending out resumes right now. I’m just looking for an opportunity,” he said.

And football?

“I’ll be back (at Maine) for the New Hampshire game. That’s it,” he said.
