WARREN — A violent two-car collision in heavy morning fog claimed the life of Lawrence Denton, 22, of Freedom and sent four other men to the hospital. The crash occurred at the intersection of Routes 131 and 90, one of Knox County’s most dangerous intersections.
Denton’s passenger, Scott Bryant, 21, of Brooks suffered head injuries in the Thursday morning crash and was listed in serious condition at the Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.
John Knutson, 39, of West Rockport, Scott Massey, 38, of Camden and James Poland, 24, of West Rockport were also taken by ambulance to the medical center where they were released after being treated for bumps and bruises and chest and head injuries.
Denton and Bryant were on their way to work at the Maine State Prison where they were guards and Knutson, Massey and Poland were on their way to work at Bath Iron Works when the two cars collided, according to Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McAusland.
McCausland said the accident was reported at 5:59 a.m. Thursday, seven minutes after sunrise on the coast. The St. George River Valley was blanketed in heavy fog at the time of the crash, he said.
McCausland said Denton and Bryant were traveling east on Route 131 in Denton’s 1992 Pontiac Grand Am when they were struck by Knutson’s vehicle which was headed south on Route 90. The front end of Knutson’s vehicle hit Denton’s in the driver’s door. The impact demolished both autos.
McCausland said it was unsure whether any of the people involved were wearing seat belts.
McCausland said investigating Trooper Laurie Rackliff attributed the acident to poor visibility and the fog. No charges will be filed. Traffic was rerouted around the accident for one hour. Assisting at the scene were MSP Sgt. Stanley Cunningham, Trooper Dale York and Knox County Sheriff Deputy Kirk Guerrette. The victim and the injured were transported to the hospital by ambulances from Warren, Union, Rockland and Thomaston.
