Bay State man drowns in Sabbathday Pond

NEW GLOUCESTER — A Massachusetts man drowned over the weekend after taking a Jetski-like water craft out for a ride on Sabbathday Pond, authorities said.

James Cornette, 48, of Concord, Mass., was discovered floating face down Saturday in the pond about 100 yards from the craft, which had washed ashore, said Paul Fournier, spokesman for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Attempts were made to revive him, but Cornette was pronounced dead at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Fournier said. A doctor at the hospital determined the cause of death was drowning. No autopsy was planned, Fournier said.

Cornette was wearing a life preserver, but not the kind recommended for the kind of craft he was riding, Fournier said. The vest Cornette was wearing did not hold his face out of the water, he said.

Cornette apparently came to Maine for the day to visit friends, Fournier said. He had gone to the pond by himself.
