I’m not a Buch supporter, but I listened to the Republican National Convention to hear what they had to say. When I heard Barbara Bush’s speech, I was not enchanted.

She seemed to be saying that if we only hug our children, everything will be all right. There are no problems here in America. She also seemed to represent the opinion that politics are best left up to the men to decide. Her wonderful husband could even take credit for the downfall of communism.

Such political naivete stuns the mind. How can anyone claim that Bush loves children when he has refused to look at the future and plan for a sustainable energy situation? This is the administration that strips national forests for quick profit, that thinks adding competitive examinations will in and of itself make our schools better, that has mortgaged our children’s future with staggering debt. Has anyone in the administration ever thought of apologizing to the children of the future for using up so much of their resources?

Barbara Bush may see her husband as protector of her own children’s children, but it doesn’t seem he has the world’s children in mind.

Let’s get real. This kind of false optimism can be dangerous. Judith Blank Bar Harbor
