Tigers, Rams, Cougars victors Lawrence, OH dropped from unbeaten ranks

Gardiner, Cony of Augusta, Mt. Blue of Farmington, and Waterville earned Pine Tree Conference football victories Friday night.

Gardiner knocked off previously unbeaten Lawrence of Fairfield by shutting them out 26-0. Cony also posted a shutout over a previously perfect team, defeating Oxford Hills of South Paris 21-0.

Mt. Blue maintained its unblemished record with a 47-23 verdict over Brunswick. Waterville edged Bangor 34-28 in overtime.

Gardiner 26, Lawrence 0

At Gardiner, Chris Whalen rushed for 192 yards on 28 carries and scored three touchdowns to lift the host Tigers past the Lawrence Bulldogs of Fairfield.

After a scoreless first quarter, Whalen scored on runs of 7, 13, and 19 yards over the next three quarters, staking 3-1 Gardiner to a 21-0 lead.

Quarterback Mike Choate then hit Todd O’Connor for a 70-yard scoring strike, rounding out the scoring. O’Connor added two PAT kicks.

For Lawrence, 3-1, Jared Libby had 69 yards on 14 carries.

Cony 21, Oxford Hills 0

At South Paris, Mike Jowdry and Scott Harriman spearheaded a Cony running game which amassed 309 yards on 44 rushes in leading the Augusta-based Rams to the shutout.

Jowdry and Harriman both scored on eight-yard runs, helping Cony out to a 14-0 halftime lead. Harriman added a two-point conversion run.

Sean Kelley then fell on a fumble in the end zone for another score as the Rams evened their season record at 2-2.

The Vikings of Oxford Hills fell to 3-1.

Mt. Blue 47, Brunswick 23

At Farmington, Ken Tyler rushed for two touchdowns and Tyson Wehrman scored two on a 92-yard pass reception and 75-yard punt return to lead the Cougars to the win.

For the 4-0 Cougars, John Black, Trent Robinson, and Greg Dalot each scored touchdowns on runs of nine, eight, and 25 yards, respectively. Tyler’s TD runs were 11- and eight-yard runs in the first quarter.

Brunswick jumped onto the scoreboard in the second quarter after Antonio Vasquez scored on a one-yard TD plunge. Chris Nichols scored on a 35-yard pass from Jon Tarr in the final quarter for the 0-4 Dragons and Vasquez closed it out with a five-yard TD run.
