I was in Homestead, Fla., the week of Oct. 21 and saw first hand the work of Hurricane Andrew.

To put the area in perspective, imagine Bangor and the surrounding 50-mile area completely gone, with no buildings, homes, trees; total destruction. Among the 185,000 homeless, there were 400 police officers who also lost their homes in the Metro Dade area.

We were able to help at the both the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross warehouses, where unfortunate circumstances abound.

Although the military is helping with food, water, and rebuilding, the two warehouses where I was were stockpiling clothing and food for Yugoslavia.

I would strongly suggest that the people of Maine contact a church, American Legion hall or police association to send items directly.

Items that are sorely needed include diapers, health products, higenic products for women, blankets, and money. Jeanette Taylor Deer Isle
