The boys teams from Bangor High School and Piscataquis Community High School of Guilford, and the girls from Old Town and Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln won conference championships in cross country action Saturday.
At the Penobscot Valley Conference championship meet at Hermon, the Bangor boys finished 22 points ahead of George Stevens Academy from Blue Hill. Bangor won the large-school title and GSA the small-school title.
Dan Carter from George Stevens set a course record in the boys race with a time of 16 minutes, 18 seconds over the three-mile course. He won the small school individual title and runnerup Joe Dana of Old Town (16:22) won the large-school title.
One of the premeet favorites, Dereck Treadwell of Old Town, was not able to run after spraining his ankle the previous night.
Treadwell’s absence severely hampered Old Town’s chances of repeating as conference champ.
“That’s the trouble with our team, knock one top guy off and that’s what can happen,” said Dana Maxim, Old Town’s coach.
In the girls meet, the Old Town girls finished first overall with 56 points and won the large-school trophy. The Bucksport Golden Bucks were second with 79 and took small-school honors.
“They’ve been running well all year, and it’s a very young group, too,” said Maxim. “I was very pleased with their performance.”
Individually, GSA’s Catherine Galipeau ran the three-mile course in 19 minutes, 25 seconds – a course record. The junior runner finished three seconds ahead of Bangor’s Heather Arsenault, who won the large-school individual title.
At the Penquis League championships in East Corinth, the Piscataquis boys scored 42 points and beat Mattanawcook Academy by 13 to win the meet.
“Teamwise, our boys were the best I’ve seen them this year,” said Bob Emrich, the PCHS coach. “Our top five runners placed in the top 14 places.”
James Emrich ran the 2.9-mile course in a meet-record time of 15:33, eight seconds ahead of runnerup J.J. Reith of Mattanawcook.
In the girls team meet, Mattanawcook beat Stearns of Millinocket by 11 points for the league title.
Individually, MA’s Kim Rideout turned in a time of 20:01 to beat teammate Kara LaChance by 17 seconds.
