Two juniors headline the 1992 Penobscot Valley Conference Field Hockey All-Stars.
Becky Blue of Old Town and Shelley Tyrrell of Orono are the only first-team repeaters, selected by vote of the conference coaches.
Moving up to the first team from honorable mention last season are Jen Enman of Bangor, Erin Hussey of Hampden Academy, and Nokomis of Newport’s Danielle Mayhew and Jessie Lister.
Other first-teamers are Maureen Collins of Brewer, Karen Klockson and Kate Peppard of Hampden Academy, Tanya Winchenbach of Hermon, and Stacey Bloemen and Nieli Thibodeau, Old Town.
Voting at the end of the regular season, Nokomis Coach Julie Richards was named by her peers as PVC Coach of the Year, and Hampden Academy received the Sportsmanship Award.
Blue, a junior halfback, is one of the top defenders for the Class B Indians, who enter Wednesday’s semifinal No. 2 at 9-2-3.
Tyrrell, a junior center midfielder, had one goal and five assists in regular-season play to lead her Red Riots into the tournament. Orono is No. 2 in Eastern Maine Class C and takes an 11-2-2 record into a Wednesday semifinal.
Bangor had a tough year, finishing at the bottom of Eastern A with an 0-14 record. But Enman, a senior, impressed coaches with her game control. Moving from the forward line to center midfield this year, she completed the season with two assists.
Hampden’s Hussey is a senior center midfielder who accepted the responsibility of controlling the game tempo for the Broncos.
Mayhew, a senior forward for Nokomis, completed the regular season as the top scorer in the PVC with 18 goals and two assists.
Lister played sweep for Nokomis and was considered the Warriors’ top defender. Nokomis entered the EM tournament seeded sixth and lost 1-0 to No. 3 Lawrence of Fairfield, ending the year at 9-6.
Collins, a junior forward, led the Witches in assists and was the second-high scorer. A member of the United States Field Hockey Association’s Futures Program, she is working to raise funds for a summer tournament tour in Europe.
Klockson, a senior, is a left back for Hampden and a key defender whose responsibility it is to stop the opposition if they break through the rest of the defense.
Peppared is a senior left-midfielder for the Broncos who enter the EM-B semifinal fourth with an 8-4-1 record. Hampden faces top-seeded defending state champion Messalonskee in Oakland.
Winchenbach was named the PVC’s top goalkeeper, although no statistics were used in the selection. Organizer Shelley Drillen of Brewer said the coaches made this a purely subjective vote because of the inconsistency in scorekeeping among PVC teams.
Bloemen, a senior wing for Old Town, had seven goals and three assists during the regular season.
Thibodeau, a senior link, had three goals and four assists in regular-season play. Old Town had a bye in the first round.
Receiving PVC honorable mention were Cheryl Murray and Kelly Irving, Bangor; Jessica Bertolino, Kelly Brooks and Suzanne Parks, Brewer; Missy Ketchen and Stephanie Dowd, Hampden; Jen Thompson and Jen Johnston, Hermon; Lynne Dorman, Jaime Clark, Jaime Lawler, and Diane Cabral, Nokomis; Jen LePage and Heidi Cote, Old Town; and Orono’s Laurie Roberts, Kelli Lock, Jen Wlodarski and Brooke Monberg.
Hampden Coach Ruth Fitzpatrick was pleased with the Sportsmanship Award.
“We’re always trying to win the sportsmanship award,” she said, “but it was one of the goals we set as a team this year. We tried to go into each game with a positive feeling, and to exhibit good sportsmanship throughout. We are pleased other teams recognized that.”
