WESTFIELD, Mass. – Tailback Tim Lightfoot rushed for school records of 255 yards on 43 carries, scoring two touchdowns as Westfield State took a 22-13 victory over Maine Maritime Saturday.
Both teams finished the New England Football Conference game with 6-3 records.
Lightfoot’s running overshadowed a similar performance by Maine Maritime’s halfback Kirk Matthieu, who scored both of his team’s touchdowns while rushing for 237 yards on 33 caries.
With that effort, Matthieu shattered the New England Division III single-season rushing record, previously held by Joe Dudek of Plymouth State. Matthieu, a junior from Fairfield, finished the season with 1,733 yards, topping Dudek’s mark of 1,615 set in 1985.
The Owls took a 13-6 lead into halftime after Kevin Wesoloski passed to wide receiver Tim Peters for a 3-yard touchdown with 23 seconds left.
The Owls sealed the victory when nose guard Scott Spiegel tackled Matthieu in the end zone for a safety with 9:45 to play.
