Bear baseball clinic slated at Portland

PORTLAND – The third annual Black Bear Baseball Clinic will be held Jan. 9-10 at the Sonesta Hotel here.

Dr. Arthur Pappas of the Boston Red Sox, the featured speaker, will discuss his pitcher conditioning program as well as arm care and injury prevention.

Mike Bordick, who batted .300 for the Oakland A’s as a second baseman and shortstop will also be on hand.

Maine head baseball coach John Winkin, Maine assistant coaches Mike Coutts, Jay Kemble, and Greg King, and umpire Mike Parquette will also discuss various parts of the game.

Former Black Bears captain and Pawtucket player Bill McInnis and Edward Little High Coach Bruce Lucas are also featured speakers. Dr. Bob Lehnard, University of Maine strength and conditioning coach will also talk about weight training and conditioning.

The clinic is designed for coaches; any players interested in attending should check with their coaches regarding regulations that may govern their team.

In addition, representatives from over 20 sporting goods companies will be on hand to promote their newest products and give away door prizes. Goldsmith’s sporting goods will be donating a $100 shopping spree.

Preregistration for coaches is $40. Checks will be made payable to the University of Maine and sent to Mike Coutts, Mahaney Clubhouse, University of Maine, Orono, Maine, 04469.

Registration the day of the event is $45 and starts at 5:15 p.m. Saturday evening. Registration for Sunday only begins at 8:30 a.m. and the cost is $35. Included in the registration fee is dinner Sunday afternoon. More information regarding the clinic may be obtained from Mike Coutts or Jay Kemble at the UM baseball office, (207) 581-1096.
