WATERVILLE – Despite standing just 5-feet-8, Husson College sophomore forward Steph Shaw knows her way around the paint.

Shaw showcased her improving frontcourt abilities at Colby College’s refurbished Wadsworth Gymnasium on Wednesday, darting in and around a pair of 6-foot-plus defenders to score 18 points and grab 13 rebounds in helping the Braves defeat the host White Mules 87-73.

The win improved Husson’s record to 5-1 on the season while Colby, playing its home opener at the gym which was serious damaged by fire in late August, slipped to 1-2.

Shaw, who was averaging 6.4 points per game this season, started things off for Husson, scoring seven of the team’s first 13 points as the Braves took a 13-7 lead.

“That got me going and I just let the game come to me,” Shaw said. “Then our defense just took it to them.”

The Braves built that lead to 26-14 with Shaw hitting a traditional 3-point play with 9:33 left in the first half.

By the 16:31 mark of the second half, Husson still held a tenuous 48-39 lead, before forward senior forward Anne Cote found the hot hand, scoring seven points in a 12-2 Husson run which gave the guests a 60-41 lead.

But, Colby, which stayed close in the first half behind the impressive 20-point, first-half performance of 6-0 junior forward Andrea Bowman (she finished with a game-high 24), lived up to its nickname’s traits of hard work with a little bit of stubborness.

With Bowman being shut down in the second half, senior 6-2 center Beth Montgomery took over.

She scored on a turnaround in the paint, was fouled, and sank the free throw to cut the lead to 60-44. Bowman then scored on a transition layup and, after a Husson miss, Montgomery scored again off an offensive rebound, cutting the lead to 12 (60-48) with 11:49 left.

Husson Coach Kissy Walker called timeout and her team responded with Kristi Wildman (14 points, eight steals, seven assists, two blocks) scoring off an inbounds pass underneath.

Colby bounced right back when Tammy Smith went coast-to-coast for a layup and, after a Husson offensive foul (illegal screen) by Cote, Christine Rackliffe canned a 3-pointer making it 62-53.

Husson continued to force up shots (with Cote scoring twice) while Colby’s Montgomery, Kathy Christy, and Smith scoring baskets.

When Husson called timeout again, the White Mules had closed the gap to six, 66-60 with 8:31 left.

It was as close as the Mules would get though as Wildman stole the ball, was fouled making a basket, and hit the free throw before Vicki Mazerall sank unanswered baskets to make it 73-60 with 6:30 remaining.

“We just got caught up in the rush game,” Shaw said. “The up-tempo got to us a bit and we started going down, taking one pass, and shooting. We didn’t pass it around and try to get the best shot we had.”

Mazerall scored 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting while also dishing out five assists. Cote finished with 19 (17 came in the second half) and Darci Collins had 10 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and four steals.

The Husson team recorded 18 steals in the game.

Montgomery had 22 points and 12 rebounds for Colby while Christy had eight points and five assists.

Husson’s vaunted fullcourt press defense hampered Colby’s guards throughout the game and was a major reason for the Mules’ 35 turnovers.
