Men’s College Basketball
MACHIAS – The University of Maine-Farmington fought off a rally by UM-Machias in the late going to post an 85-78 men’s college basketball victory here Saturday.
After UMF led by 13 in the first half, the Clippers battled back to go ahead 74-73 with 5:04 to play. Bill Brooks hit two free throws for the Beavers at 4:51 to give them back the lead 75-74, and Doug Sautter’s 3-pointer put them ahead to stay shortly after.
Dan Header, who hit eight of nine from the floor, led UMF (3-5) with 18, Kevin Shaw had 13, and Sautter 12. Paul True had 10 assists.
For the Clippers (1-5), P.J. Bristol had 23 points, Ralph Hirtle 17 and both Chad Fenton and Kris Kovacs 10.

UMPI sweeps pair
The University of Maine-Presque Isle swept a pair of games over the weekend with a 91-80 victory over Johnson State College of Johnson, Vt., Sunday and a 107-82 win over Lyndon State College of Lyndonville, Vt., Saturday.
On Sunday, Ernie Kavanagh had 20 points and 10 rebounds to help lead the UMPI Owls to the win over Johnson State.
For 4-2 UMPI, Shawn Manter and Chris Casavant each scored 19 points. Charles Pearson had 12.
Sunny Brink and Steve Blouin each scored 21 points to lead 3-2 Johnson State. Dave Deuso had 16 points and R.J. Garrow added 14.
On Saturday, Bernard Grenway scored 26 points, Charles Pearson had 21, Manter added 19, and Simon Mitchell had 16 points, 10 steals, and eight assists. Kavanagh scored 11 points.
Carl Parton and Dan Sleeman each scored 14 points for 0-4 Lyndon State. Aaron Willey scored 12 points, Jeff Mosher 11, and Bill Littlefield 10.
