3 trucks, car involved in I-95 pileup

Traffic in the northbound lane of Interstate 95 in Bangor was backed up for two hours Monday afternoon after an accident involving three tractor-trailer trucks and a Subaru. The accident resulted in $50,000 damage.

Kenneth Coro of Waterville, who was driving the Subaru, miraculously escaped injury and his car remained intact after getting caught in the middle of the three-truck pileup in Carmel.

The trouble began when a tractor-trailer truck driven by Greg Kenny, 44, of New Brunswick jackknifed on slippery roads during a brief snowstorm in the Carmel-Etna area, said Maine State Police Trooper David Bowler.

Coro was traveling behind the truck. He successfully avoided hitting the truck.

Daniel St. Pierre, 35, of Berwick came along in another truck and slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting the Subaru. The truck jackknifed in the road.

A third truck, driven by St. Pierre’s brother, Matthew St. Pierre, 26, of Elliot, was unable to stop in time, and Matthew’s truck broadsided his brother’s truck.

Coro’s Subaru was trapped between the trucks, but was not hit, Bowler said.

All three tractor-trailer trucks were empty, Bowler said. Kenny’s truck received about $20,000 damage and Kenny was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, was treated and later released.

No one else was injured, Bowler said.

Daniel St. Pierre’s truck received $5,000 damage and Matthew St. Pierre’s truck received $25,000, Bowler said.

Traffic was unable to pass through the area and was at a complete standstill for two hours until the trucks could be cleared from the area, Bowler said.
