Key players: Maine – F Stephanie Guidi (10.3 ppg, 5.0 rpg), F Heather Briggs (9.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg), G Stacia Rustad (9.0 ppg), F Catherine Gallant (8.0 rpg, 6.7 rpg), G Chrissy Strong (4.3 ppg, 5.7 apg); St. Peter’s – G Melany Massey (20.0 ppg, 3.0 apg), F Millicent Gertrude (12.7 ppg, 10.3 rpg), F Nadine Davis (10.3 ppg, 6.3 rpg), G Shonda Jones (6.7 ppg), C Pageen Ryan (3.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg)
Outlook: A good road test for Maine. St. Peter’s went 24-7 last season, won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title, and appeared in the NCAA tournament. The Peahens lost two starters from that team, including the program’s best player Joanne Balsamo (1,663 career points). Both teams have started off the season shooting poorly, with Maine hitting at a .348 clip (62-for-178) and St. Peter’s at .396 (67-for-179). St. Peter’s, which has won 20 games in 12 of the last 14 seasons, has lost to Rider, Liberty, and Appalachian State so far this year.
HUSSON vs. UM-FARMINGTON
Time, site: Wednesday, 5:30 p.m., Dearborn Gymnasium, Farmington.
Records: Husson 7-1, UMF 5-1.
Key players: Husson – G Kristi Wildman (16.3 ppg), G Vicki Mazerall (13.3 ppg), F Anne Cote (11.8 ppg), C Tara Leavitt (11.4 ppg), G Darci Collins (11.0 ppg), F Steph Shaw (9.0 ppg); UM-Farmington (after five games) – G Dawn Ann Higgins (17.4 ppg), G Cathy Hartman (4.2 ppg), G Candy Berger (10.8 ppg), F Nicole Fraser (13.0 ppg), F Marsha Hamlin (8.2 ppg).
Outlook: UMF Coach Len MacPhee has assembled a team which should make a run at the NAIA District 5 playoffs. The Beavers, 3-3 through six games last year, lost at defending champion St. Joseph’s (96-75) and this game against Husson will show how far the team has to go before it can join the elite teams. Husson is coming off big win vs. Southern Maine. Husson’s pressure defense against UMF’s guards will go a long way in deciding the outcome.
Other games: Southern Maine at Colby, 5:30 p.m.; St. Joseph’s at U-New England, 5:30 p.m.
