To help lower cancer risk, a unique 1993 calendar gives monthly suggestions on easy ways to eat more nutritiously — all presented in a lighthearted style. The “Great Moments in Food History” calendar features fun, full-color illustrations and interesting facts about food and cooking.

Published by the American Institute for Cancer Research, the “Great Moments” wall calendar begins with ancient civilization’s earliest farmers, and provides tips on how to eat more fresh produce and grains each day. Other months’ topics include the ancient Egyptian snack of popcorn and tips on choosing low-fat cooking methods, the British Earl of Sandwich’s namesake invention with some healthful variations; and nutritional advantages of today’s microwave cooking. Each month’s food history moment is illustrated with a detailed watercolor by artist Chris Stephens.

Eating a low-fat, high-fiber diet is recommended by major health groups like the American Institute for Cancer Research, based on estimates by researchers that 40 to 60 percent of all cancers are linked to our diets. The “Great Moments” calendar is an enjoyable way to learn a few healthful eating habits each month to improve overall health and lower your cancer risk.
