Alley posts win No. 400 with Royals

JONESPORT – Ordie Alley, a Maine coaching legend currently in his 28th season, won his 400th career game on Tuesday night as his Jonesport-Beals Royals defeated Sumner High School of East Sullivan 88-71 in schoolboy basketball action.

Mike King scored 11 fourth-quarter points and Braden Alley added seven points in the final eight minutes to help lead Jonesport-Beals to the win. The Royals outscored Sumner 27-12 in the final quarter.

King finished with 23 points while Alley finished with 18. Tony Beal contributed 21 points for the 5-1 winners.

Sumner, 4-2, was led by Shawn Merchant with 20 points and Linden Curtis with 17. Todd Sargent also chipped in with 12.

Alley’s career mark now stands at 400-123 (.765). He is in his 25th year at Jonesport-Beals High School and has led the Royals to 22 Eastern Maine basketball tournament appearances.

Under Alley, the Royals have won nine state Class D championships and 11 Eastern Maine Class D championships.

The lobsterman from Beals Island began his coaching career at Beals High School, guiding the Braves to an Eastern Maine small-school championship in 1966, his first season.

When Jonesport and Beals consolidated to form Jonesport-Beals High School in 1968, Alley assumed that coaching position.
