Maine man’s wallet returned with $4,000

SIDNEY — The “spirit of the season” took on new meaning for a Hancock man who thought his holiday would be ruined when he lost a wallet containing $4,000 in cash and a $1,000 winning lottery ticket.

Armando Boccia was on a holiday trip to visit family in New York last week when he lost the wallet, which included no identification.

Boccia, who owns a restaurant, realized the wallet was gone in Massachusetts. Believing his holiday trip had been spoiled, he headed back to Hancock and notified police of his loss.

Meanwhile, Martin Veilleux of Belgrade, the state Department of Transportation custodian for the Sidney rest stop on I-95, found the wallet full of cash.

Because DOT offices are closed on weekends, he took the wallet home and notified his supervisor Monday morning.

Boccia promptly drove to DOT division headquarters in Fairfield to retrieve his wallet.

“He was delighted,” said Jon Whitten, the division engineer for the DOT.

“Here’s a man who thought his plans for a family Christmas were ruined and that he probably would never see his money again. Now, thanks to Martin, he’s got it all back.”
