… There are many cities and towns throughout the country that correctly perceive winter to be a very dangerous season. These safety-conscious localities have wisely adopted ordinances requiring by law complete public and private walkway snow clearing within 24 hours of the final flakes. Do it or face a fine.
In Bangor and the surrounding area, however, it is not uncommon to see school children, paper boys and girls, elderly citizens, letter carriers, and others walking down icy streets for lack of anywhere else to walk. There are tragedies waiting to happen out there. It is also not uncommon to see overburdened city maintenance crews clearing the public wlak on one side of the street several days after the storm has ended. Public awareness needs whatever attention we can give.
We should all take it upon ourselves, in whatever ways we can, to educate citizens to prompt and proper snow removal. Whether it be through the schools, public service announcements, or conversation, much can be gained. People should be informed that not only their approach walk and steps, but also the entire front public walk — not just the portion that leads to their driveway — should be cleared of snow and ice. It is in their best interest to do so; ask any lawyer or insurance company.
Winter safety is exceedingly important and we should all be alert to the maximum extent possible, but unless people are educated and safety ordinances passed on this snow-removal issue, accidents are going to occur. Scott Wingate Bangor
