Fire destroys Searsport home

SEARSPORT — Fire destroyed a mobile home here Monday morning, but smoke detectors helped the sleeping occupants escape with their lives.

The fire at the home of Fulton Gross on Mount Ehpraim Road was reported at about 8 a.m. Fire Chief Arthur Koch said Gross and another unidentified person “were sound asleep, but they were woken up by smoke detectors and got out with no injuries. I’m a firm believer in alarms, and here’s a good reason why.”

Koch said the trailer and all the contents were a total loss. Gross had time to put on a pair of jeans, and the other occupant was wrapped up in a blanket. “That’s it, nothing else is left.” he said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. The state Fire Marshal’s Office will inspect the scene Tuesday. Koch said at least 22 Searsport volunteers fought the fire for about three hours.
