Man accused of conning women to be arraigned

PORTLAND — A man accused of conning women into marriage and then leaving with their money was being held Monday while awaiting arraignment on two counts of theft by deception.

Steven Gloger, 45, of New York was flown over the weekend from Toledo Express Airport in Ohio and turned over to authorities in Maine.

Gloger’s scheduled arraignment Monday in Cumberland County Superior Court was postponed until Tuesday to allow him time to hire a lawyer, a court spokeswoman said.

The Maine charges date back to late 1988 and early 1989 when Gloger allegedly attempted to pass counterfeit checks while he posed as a wealthy lawyer and accountant.

Gloger, who had been held in Ohio’s Seneca County Jail since Nov. 14, waived extradition to Maine in a hearing last Wednesday in Tiffin Municipal Court.

Municipal Judge Frederick Daniels had continued a Dec. 17 hearing because authorities in Maine and in Illinois, where Gloger is wanted on similar charges, had not completed the necessary paperwork.

Gloger faces a charge of one count each of defrauding an innkeeper, deceptive practices and being a fugitive from justice.

Illinois authorities also are trying to revoke Gloger’s probation on a 1989 conviction of writing bad checks.

Police in Quincy, Ill., said Gloger met women who had taken out personal ads, married or promised to marry several of them, then took their money and left bills.

One of his alleged victims was Sherry Bell of Tiffin, Ohio. Gloger was arrested Nov. 12 after relatives of Ms. Bell became suspicious of him and asked police to run a background check. Police discovered Gloger’s record in Illinois.
