Ellsworth dump closing today

ELLSWORTH — Some folks might want to visit for old time’s sake. Others may want to unload that pickup truck full of trash that has been sitting around for a month or so.

Whatever it is that draws people to the city dump, Thursday will be the last chance they’ll ever get to use it. Ellsworth City Manager Timothy King said Wednesday that as of New Year’s Day, the landfill off Stabawl Road will close for good.

“Ordinarily, today would have been the last day it was open, but we’re going to have the landfill open on Thursday all day and people can take whatever they want over there,” King said.

As of Jan. 1, all refuse, including small amounts of demolition debris, must be taken to the Ellsworth transfer station off Vittum Road. King said it would be incumbent upon local contractors to make their own arrangements for disposing of larger amounts of demolition debris.

The city manager said the state undoubtedly will expect the city to cap its landfill, but such action would not be taken until the state formulates a plan to reimburse the community for the closure costs.
