Land board to consider 244 acres in Lubec

The latest purchase being considered by the Land for Maine’s Future Board is a 244-acre parcel in Lubec with extensive frontage on Cobscook Bay. The price tag for Horan Head is $350,000.

The board will meet on Jan. 11 in Augusta to vote on acquiring Horan Head, an undeveloped parcel with 12,000 feet of shorefront that includes both steep bluffs dropping off to deep water and mud flats. The interior of the property is wooded with mature spruce, cedar, pine and hardwood.

“The property contains important wildlife values of statewide significance in an outstandingly beautiful part of Maine,” said C. Edwin Meadows, commissioner of the Department of Conservation and a member of the Land for Maine’s Future board.

Officials in the State Planning Office consider the price being asked for the property, which is the estate of Frances Bradley, to be a bargain. The sale represents the family’s continued commitment to land conservation, particularly on Cobscook Bay. The late Frances Bradley sold Hog Island to The Nature Conservancy several years ago.

Bradley’s heirs have asked that the land be designated the Bradley Wildlife Management Area. It would be managed by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

“We are very pleased that this land will be available for the people of Maine to enjoy,” said Dana Bradley, a representative of the family. The property has traditionally been used by people in the Lubec area for hunting and other outdoor activities, and such uses could continue if it is purchased by the state.

If Horan Head is purchased, it would become the 34th property acquired by the Land for Maine’s Future Board since it was set up. The board has bought 48,846 acres, including 105 miles of shorefront on lakes, rivers and the ocean.

The purchase of Horan Head would leave the board with less than $6 million for other purchases. Maine voters approved $35 million for the board in 1987.

The board will meet on the Horan Head purchase at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, in the conference room at the State Planning Office. Anyone wanting to comment on the proposal may make a brief presentation at the meeting or send written comments to the board’s staff, State House Station 38, Augusta 04333.
