NEWS announces retirement, promotions > Circulation chief steps down after long service

The Bangor Daily News has announced four promotions and the retirement of William “Pat” Barnard, a longtime member of the paper’s circulation department.

Barnard has been associated with the newspaper since 1955, when he became an independent contractor, selling the newspaper in assigned areas. He became a regular employee of the paper in 1968, when he was named a district supervisor in circulation. He was named assistant circulation manager in 1982 and circulation manager in 1990.

John Bishop, vice president of operations at the paper, lauded Barnard for his successful effort as circulation manager to keep circulation stable during difficult economic times. He attributed Barnard’s success to his many years of experience.

Barnard will be replaced as circulation manager by Neil Noddin. Starting in 1952 as a mailer, Noddin has served as assistant production manager and as a production superintendent. Noddin graduated from Bangor High School.

Donald Darkis has been named production manager at the newspaper. Darkis is a 22-year veteran at the company, having started in 1970 as an apprentice in the composing room. He most recently served as a production superintendent.

In his new position, Darkis will be responsible for all mechanical aspects of preparing and printing the daily newspaper.

NEWS Publisher Richard J. Warren also has announced the promotion of James Spox to marketing administrative manager. Spox, a graduate of the University of Maine, will be responsible for planning, developing and controlling all of the internal procedures for the advertising and circulation functions of the NEWS.

He will assist in the planning and budgeting process for all areas of operations and will assist in developing marketing policies.

Warren also announced the promotion of Arlene Boyle to administrative assistant to the publisher. Boyle joined the organization in 1981 as a classified adviser in advertising and subsequently has served as a library clerk and as executive secretary for administration.

In her new position, Boyle will assume broader responsibilities as an assistant to the publisher.
