PRESQUE ISLE — Karen Campbell-Sawyer, assistant director of Aroostook County Action Program’s Preschool Services, has been certified as a program trainer by the High-Scope Educational Research Foundation in Ypsilanti, Mich.
She is one of two individuals in Maine with that certification.
The High-Scope curriculum was selected by the Maine Department of Education for use in the state’s preschool demonstration sites. The curriculum was designed for 3- and 4-year-olds to provide them with skills in problem-solving, decision making and to prepare them for academic work before they enter public school. Independence and self-esteem are emphasized, according to Sawyer-Campbell.
Sawyer-Campbell will provide training and observations for ACAP Head Start and day-care classrooms and assist in the development of new programs. She is available to other preschool programs to conduct workshops and provide consultation on how to organize and implement programs for preschoolers.
