Bangor High School senior Amy Walls, a three-time defending state champion in the 100-yard freestyle and two-time defending champ in the 50 freestyle, will not swim for the Rams this season.
Walls began the season swimming for the team, before coming down with a respiratory infection. The illness may have been linked to the poor water conditions at the time at Husson College, Bangor’s home pool.
Walls sat out the next two weeks, seeking an alternative way to practice so she could remain healthy and still swim for the Rams and defend her state titles.
School officials balked, citing school policy and the Husson pool being brought back up to state standards, then Bangor Athletic Director Steve Vanidestine gave Walls a deadline of Monday to decide if she was going to swim for the Rams this season.
Walls decided not to swim for the high school team and instead is concentrating on lowering her times in the more competitive United States Swimming ranks with the Bangor YMCA’s Hurricane Swim Club.
“I don’t want to have to choose, but if I had to choose I would probably end up going with USS,” Walls said last month. “It seems like a lot of hassle for nothing, but I have to drop my times for college.”
