My letter concerns all the recent commotion dealing with the president’s pardoning of the people involved in the Iran-Contra scandal. All that is going on is a considerable amount of witch hunting.

If Sen. Mitchell is so concerned about the law being respected and that everyone be held accountable, why wasn’t he as vocal in this position during the House check-bouncing scandal? Why has he not called for the removal and prosecution of all the people guilty of bouncing $750 or more in checks? If any average citizen did this he or she would be held accountable.

Why hasn’t he publicly condemned Sen. Rostenkowski for his involvement in the House post office scandal? Meanwhile, Rostenkowski has rejected two subpoenas to appear before a Washington grand jury. He isn’t even required to answer questions about the charges. Now, who has blatant disrespect for the law?

As for the people who are voicing their opinions that Bush is wrong, do they have an unbiased opinion or are they just accusing Bush of being wrong because they don’t like his views? Did they think it was wrong for President Carter to pardon all the people who “avoided” the draft during Vietnam?

Were they as critical of Anita Hill when Clarence Thomas was found innocent of the charges of sexual harassment that she made? Didn’t she basically “mislead” or “lie” before Congress?

This whole situation tells us why we have a lot of the problems in this country that we do. It looks like people are starting to want the laws to be enforced only when someone they don’t like or agree with is involved. That is not the way our country is supposed to be run. Remember, “all people are created equal,” so if you’re condemning Bush for his actions then you had better to trying to do something about all the abuses that members of our government are guilty of, regardless of their party or beliefs.

I agree with the way a good percentage of Americans feel: Let this go and stop beating a dead horse. Craig D. Brann Penobscot
