SAD 25 board boosts fees for some enrichment classes

SHERMAN STATION — Fees for some adult education classes and driver education classes in SAD 25 will increase immediately as a result of school board action on Wednesday.

The registration fees for enrichment courses offered by the district’s adult education program will increase from $8 per course to $15. Superintendent of Schools Carroll Nightingale said Friday that the increase was necessary to cover the cost of those courses because the district was no longer reimbursed for them by the state.

Also increasing will be the cost for driver education from $115 to $140. Nightingale said the increase was necessary to cover increased costs for operation of the program.

He said that earlier car dealers had donated the use of cars for the program, but now schools district must rent the cars. He said that rental fees recently increased from $4 a day to $8 a day.

“We just began to lose money, not significantly, but enough so that we had to make the change,” he said, noting that the last increase in the cost of the program occurred eight years ago.

Also at the meeting, the board approved a legislative leave of absence for the remainder of the school year for Henry Joy, a teacher at Katahdin Junior High School. Joy was elected in November to represent House District 140. Joy also announced that he planned to retire from teaching at the close of the current school year.
