BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

I wish to recommend for repetitive reading Pete Warner’s Jan. 6 article in the sports section giving a coach’s “Ten considerations for parents of high school athletes.”

As a family physician, a parent of five children who enjoy sports and a team doctor for a high school, I am well aware of the challenges of providing a supportive, rather than oppressive, athletic environment which accepts realistic expectations while motivating to maximum potential, develops both character and skill, and honors the lessons of disappointing failure as well as exuberant success.

Your “veteran coach” is wise indeed; she/he has words for winning as parents. They should be displayed in the office of every doctor who cares for athletes, distributed with athletic information provided by the high schools and given to each athlete at the time of a sports physical.
