All five Bowdoin College of Brunswick women’s teams will be in action this week.
The swim team hosts Amherst (Mass.) College Tuesday at 1 p.m., and travels to Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., for an 11 a.m. meet on Saturday.
Indoor track opens its season Thursday in a tri-meet at the University of Maine in Orono with the University of Massachusetts, beginning at 1 p.m.
Ice hockey has three games, starting with a trip to the University of Maine for a 7 p.m. contest Tuesday at Alfond Arena. The Polar Bears then host Middlebury (Vt.) College on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Yale University of New Haven, Conn., at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The basketball team has three games as well, beginning Tuesday at Colby College in Waterville at 5:30 p.m. The Polar Bears then host Colby-Sawyer College of New London, N.H., Friday at 6 p.m. and Middlebury on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Women’s squash hosts Colby at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and competes in the three-day Williams Invitational Jan. 22-24.
Charlie Butt’s swim team heads into its meet with Amherst undefeated at 3-0, but the team hasn’t swum since Dec. 5. The women came back 10 days ago to prepare for the second half of the season.
Co-captain Ruth Reinhard and Mary Feynot a co-capt are both ranked in the top five nationally in their respective events; Reinhard in the backstroke and Fey in the breaststroke.
Sports information director Craig Cheslog reports while the two don’t automatically qualify for the nationals, they are already on their way, and he expects them to do so.
Peter Slovenski’s indoor track team competes in a tri-meet at Maine with Amherst on Thursday to open its 1993 season.
Seniors Eileen Hunt of Island Falls and Erin O’Neill of Scituate, Mass., co-captain this year’s squad.
Hunt is a four-time All-American, twice each in cross country and outdoor track, and holds the school record for 1,000 meters. An outstanding student, she was named an Academic All-American last year.
O’Neill is the Bowdoin recordholder in the long and triple jump, and was a member of the 4×200 relay team which set a new college record last year.
Bob Woodruff’s ice hockey team hopes to even its 2-3 record against the University of Maine Tuesday.
The Polar Bears hosted the re-located Colby Invitational last weekend, finishing third in that tournament following a 10-4 loss to Brown and a 5-2 win over Colby.
Senior captain Carol Thomas, a forward, leads the team with eight goals. She holds the school’s career scoring record with 78. Forward Nancy Gorton is the team’s second-leading scorer.
Coach Harvey Shapiro’s basketball team team is not complaining about its 3-6 record, since the squad includes eight freshmen, two sophomores, and two seniors.
According to Cheslong, the program expected to struggle a bit this year with so many newcomers, but those rookies are getting off to a good start.
The leading scorer is freshman Laura Schultz of Cornish, who led the 1992 Bangor Daily News All-Maine third team. She was the first girl at Sacopee Valley of South Hiram to surpass the 1,000-point career mark.
Going into Tuesday’s game at Colby, Schultz led the team in three categories. She is the top scorer with 16.2 points per game, leads in assists with 2.8 per game, and in steals with 15 in nine games.
Senior captain Lisa Morang of Augusta is the second-leading scorer with 9.2 points per game and the second-leading rebounder with 6.8 per game.
Caribou freshman Kristin St. Peter, who was an All-Maine honorable mention selection in ’92, is the Polar Bears’ third-leading scorer, averaging nine points per game. Airami Bogle of Fairfield, a sophomore, is the top rebounder with 6.9 per game and next in scoring with 8.9 points per game.
Daniel Hammond’s squash team will also try to even out, taking a 1-2 record into its matches with Colby on Wednesday.
Individually, sophomore Emily Lubin is having a super season and is currently undefeated at 3-0. The only other player with a winning record is 2-1 junior Jennifer Bogue.
