FARMINGTON – The University of Maine-Farmington is sponsoring a mixed-doubles, indoor tennis tournament the week of Jan. 25 at the UMF Health and Fitness Center.
In celebrating the new year, the combined age of each mixed-doubles team must total 93 years or more. For example, a 30-year-old female must be teamed with a male who is at least 63.
The registration fee is $10 for members and $12 for non-members. The registration deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22.
Rich Marshall, assistant director of the center, said UMF is hosting one tournament a month, and this was requested by senior players.
The facility has a membership of 1,200 in addition to 2,000 student and faculty members.
A multipurpose facility for tennis, basketball, volleyball, badminton, floor hockey, indoor soccer and track, it also has strength-training equipment, free weights, and Lifecycle machines. Ground is being broken for a pool to complement the facility.
Marshall hopes to attract a minimum of 16 teams for the tournament co-sponsored by Reebok, which will provide each winning team with free pair of shoes.
