BRUNSWICK — Maine Coast Heritage Trust protected 3,259 acres of Maine wildlife habitat, forest, farmland and open space in 1992, including nine island, two bald eagle nests, and 16 miles of ocean shoreline.
“We completed a record number of conservation projects last year,” said Jay Espy, trust president. “The idea of voluntary land conservation is really taking hold in Maine: Almost all of these projects were conserved by landowners who donated an easement on their land or the land itself.”
Conservation easements allow the landowner to retain title while restricting development.
The trust concentrates on protecting land with scenic, recreational and ecological value, and have included the prominent eastern entrance to Bucks Harbor, a parcel along the Damariscotta River, and several saltwater farms. Preserves in Addison and Castine were established for townspeople to enjoy.
