Lights OK’d for academy football field

DOVER-FOXCROFT — The possibility of nighttime football at Foxcroft Academy may be a reality by late summer if funds are generated by local community members and alumni to pay for the $35,000 project.

Foxcroft Academy trustees recently approved the plan to provide the lighting for the field.

Jim Robinson, who represented a group of interested people, presented the plans to the trustees. The project involves the installation of four poles 80 feet in height, with two poles on each side of the field. The poles, which will be set back from the field 70 feet, will be placed so that the present track and field will be lighted.

The cost could be less than the $35,000 if some materials and labor costs are donated. These funds would come from private donations through the Annual Giving Campaign, with a designation to the Football Lighting Fund.

“The history of Foxcroft Academy is filled with stories of private philanthropic efforts. Jim’s work, along with others who are supporting this effort, will open a new chapter in Foxcroft Academy athletics that would have otherwise been impossible. The trustees greatly appreciate his effort,” said Kevin Stitham, president of the trustees.

According to Headmaster Howard Ryder, schools that added nighttime football had an increase in gate receipts of 200 to 300 percent.

Lighting the football field also will provide lighting for track meets which often finish in the twilight hours, he said. Other opportunities for sports to be held at night also are being discussed.

Those wanting to make a contribution may make checks payable to Foxcroft Academy. The donations may be given to Jim Robinson or sent to Foxcroft Academy Annual Giving Campaign-Football Lighting Fund, 147 West Main St., Dover-Foxcroft 04426.
